About Ian NG

Ian Ng is a New York City – based composer.   His music has been described by The New York Times as “invigorating” with “intricate rhythms”, and by The Financial Times as having “a solid rhythmic grounding”. The South China Morning Post observed that Mr. Ng’s “attractive contrapuntal features are begging to be heard again”.  He graduated from New York University with a Master Degree in Music Composition on a full scholarship.

Mr. Ng is the recipient the American Prize, ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, Robert Avalon International Music Composition Competition and ACL Young Composers Competition. In Spring 2016, Mr. Ng made his Carnegie Hall debut with his commissioned work Think Twice – Three Musical Games, performed by Duo Scordatura. His past season commissions include I Recall Last Night at the Opera for New York Symphonic Brass at DiMenna Center for Classical Music, orchestral work How Fair Thou Dost Shine for the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra at the Brooklyn Museum, chamber music A Constant Fretful Stamping of Hooves for the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble at the Frederick Lowe Theater and piano solo An Occasional Fretful Stamping of Hooves for the 42nd Hong Kong Arts Festival at the Hong Kong City Hall. As NYU resident composer, his commissioned composition for their orchestra, Cité en l’air, had its premiere in February 2012 at Symphony Space in New York City. Other collaborations include JACK Quartet at the Provincetown Playhouse, andPlay at the Firehouse Space, the Atlantic Music Festival Contemporary Ensemble at Colby College, choral group Die Konzertisten, HK New Music Ensemble, pianist Dimitri Dover, violinists Charles Yang and Tessa Lark, Exploring the Metropolis ConEd Composer Residency, and the Bright Sheng Partnership.

His music Grand Jeté on a Violin was choreographed by Marcelo Gomes, principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, and had its premiere in 2012 at Lincoln Center.  It has subsequently been performed at New York City Center, and at theaters in Los Angeles, North Carolina, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Japan, Brazil and Israel. The ballet is featured in the Juilliard Open Studios interactive app. The music is also included in American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland’s feature documentary A Ballerina’s Tale, which had its premiere at the TriBeCa Film Festival in Spring 2015. Other dance and theater collaborations include Complexions Contemporary Ballet at the Joyce Theater, Fire Island Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre JKO School, Some Dance Company and the City Contemporary Dance Company.

This year, Mr. Ng has made his European debut with the Brouwer Trio at the 2016 Valencia International Performing Arts Festival in Spain. In the Spring of 2017, he will be presenting his first opera with the support of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and New York State Council on the Arts.
